Six big reasons to go insulated
Why insulated?
Temperature control
An insulated door significantly reduces heat transfer, keeping your garage and the rooms adjacent to it far more comfortable through the seasons.
Sound Dampening
Insulation dramatically reduces noise — both from outside traffic entering the garage, and the mechanical sound of the door itself when opening and closing.
Energy Savings
With less heat escaping through your garage, your heating and cooling systems work less hard, reducing energy bills and your home’s carbon footprint.
Less operating noise
Many homeowners underestimate how much noise a standard door creates. Insulated doors use closed construction on panels, reducing vibration and rattling significantly.
Insulated doors look better
Insulated doors use improved construction and materials that simply look more premium — with a cleaner, stronger, and more substantial appearance at the kerb.
More usable garage space
Better temperature control means your garage becomes a genuinely comfortable space for a workshop, home gym, or hobby room — not just storage.
How to tell if your door is insulated
What to look for
If you’ve ever been in the market for a garage door, you may not have noticed how different they can be. If you look at the back of a garage door panel, and insulated door should feel solid.
If the garage door is not insulated, the back of the door panel will simply be open, meaning you can see directly into the panel sections from inside the garage.
An insulated garage door will be enclosed, making it more stable and more comfortable. It will also be significantly heavier.
Feel the back of the panel
An insulated panel feels solid and enclosed — you cannot see into the panel sections from inside the garage.
Check the weight
Insulated doors are noticeably heavier than single-skin alternatives. A light door is almost certainly uninsulated.
Listen when it opens
Insulated doors operate more quietly. Excessive rattling or vibration is a sign the door lacks internal insulation material.
Check for an R-value rating
Genuine insulated doors carry an R-value rating on their spec sheet. No R-value means no meaningful insulation.
